At the war's end, the U.S. government collected and catalogued all the records, North and South, and clerks recorded each man's summarized muster roll information on file cards like these. Information might include hospitalizations, leaves of absence, desertions and capture by the enemy.
Private Rucker was killed in the same battle which claimed the life of Confederate Gen. J.E.B.Stuart. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, in an unmarked grave. The author had a headstone placed in "The Soldiers' Section" to honor his sacrifice.
